 Dear Prospective Doctoral Student:

You have made a wise decision to pursue a Ph.D. degree in nursing at this time. As you are well aware the current healthcare climate is characterized by rapid change in patient care services nationwide and a critical shortage of nurses. This shortage is exacerbated by the limited supply of doctorally prepared faculty. Leading nursing organizations cite the growing need for nurses prepared at the doctoral level to educate sufficient numbers of R.N.s needed to meet current and future health care demands. Doctorally prepared nurses are also needed to function in administrative and advance practice clinical positions.

As a Catholic University whose mission is to prepare servant leaders for a global society, the College of Nursing at Seton Hall University has a long and distinguished history of preparing entry level and advanced practice nurses to serve recipients and providers of health care locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. The Seton Hall University College of Nursing offered the first baccalaureate nursing program in New Jersey in 1940 and was the first college-level nursing program in a Catholic University in the northeast. The graduate program, established in 1975, is currently one of only two nursing programs in New Jersey ranked in the top 100 by US News and World Report.

Our exciting new Ph.D. in Nursing program will continue our tradition of being a leader in offering the highest quality of nursing education. The 46-credit, post-masters in nursing curriculum is comprised of core and related course requirements in knowledge development in nursing, research methods, and select cognates. As a doctoral student you will identify a research concentration, which will culminate in a doctoral dissertation focusing on clinical outcomes and evidence-based practice in academic, research, clinical practice, healthcare administration, or policy environments. You will be taught and mentored by distinguished faculty who are widely recognized as scholars and researchers.

The Ph.D. in Nursing program at Seton Hall University will provide you with the knowledge and skills to pursue a lifetime of intellectual inquiry, creative scholarship, and independent or collaborative research. I invite you to explore the opportunities that the Ph.D. in Nursing Program at Seton Hall University can provide to help you advance your professional career and the nursing profession.

Sincerely,

Caryle G. Wolahan, Ed.D., R.N., F.A.A.N.
